I am giving the Ring Doorbell a try and to do so I have had to overcome many negative thoughts-
Privacy is a big concern, for my videos and the people who end up caught in them.
It just doesn’t feel right to have such surveillance in a residential setting. It’s bad enough that the government has cameras everywhere and so do Teslas etc, but at home it feels highly compromised.
Does it actually increase my chance of being burgled? Some reports suggest this could be the case.
I moved on from my concerns in a hypocritical manner and I have to say that I have been very impressed so far.
The setup process is clean and reliable alongside an installation scheme that includes all of the tools you need and instructions that mean even non-practical people like me can cope with it.
And then there is the quality of the video capture and the advantage of ensuring that you will never miss a visitor or a package again.
I have further to go before I decide whether to keep it or not, but it shames me to say that I do really like it so far. Sorry.
A doorbell was never something I felt I needed for security, as the security feature is not being able to talk to someone at your door, but was about recording the perimeter of your property so as to make you be more an issue for a burglar/criminal than any of my next door neighbours (ultimately every house is easy to break into, just some are more troublesome than others). Selfish that this seems, this means I have only invested in the recording camera capability that was achieved by locating low cost camera in the right places around my property such that people who approach the entries are recorded - more to make my place look harder to deal with, identify what happened, when, rather than who - because they will cover their face.... - paired with a NAS to record the event. That and a good security light that illuminates these places as well so that no one approaches in darkness.
Privacy for my neighbours is part of that - my cameras can luckily be placed so they don't record anything but my land... which is an important consideration. Not everyone can do that however.
Hope you like it. We still don’t have one. We do have game cameras for the guys who messed up our mailbox though.
