Apple has clearly seen enthusiasm around the Apple Watch Ultra and its huge screen. With this year’s Apple Watch Series 10, it’s taking a note from the Ultra’s playbook and giving larger displays to both Series 10 models.
The smaller Watch is growing from 41mm to 45mm
The larger Watch is growing from 45mm to 49mm
This means the small Watch will now be the size of last year’s ‘big Watch,’ and the big Watch will be the same size as the Apple Watch Ultra… More here.
The rumours appear to be consistent and likely true at this point, and I am struggling to understand this move.
There are natural laws for watches, smart or not, and we haven’t seen BIG watches since the awful trend grew in the 1990’s.
If anything the trend in traditional watches has moved to smaller cases and we are now seeing 36mm round cases becoming the most popular. When you consider that a 36mm square watch feels similar to a 40mm square watch on the wrist, the move to a minimum of 45mm square is odd indeed.
Apple may be making the new watches thinner, but the footprint of the non-Ultra models is already acceptable and so the confusion grows. A thinner watch is more comfortable to wear, but if it has a bigger footprint then the advantages are taken away instantly.
I suspect that the new 45mm thinner watch will have battery performance the same as the current 41mm model and the 49mm will match the current 45mm offering.
My wife will not be able to wear a 45mm watch, her wrists are far too small, and so I can only presume that she is in a small minority for Apple to make such a decision.
For a company that supposedly has an appreciation of real watches, they are displaying the absolute opposite. They are killing the idea completely.
Curious. I like smaller for pretty much everything.
