I have been checking out some of the smart rings on the market and the options are sparse currently. The Oura offering is expensive initially and is then followed by a subscription charge. Many of the others are from brands that we have never heard, but the Ultrahuman offering does stand out.
It packs a huge amount of kit in a tiny space, you get to check your sizing first and there is no subscription charge. Many of the reviews of very positive, if you ignore that almost every reviewer has been sent a free ring, and the app looks very impressive.
When I tried the sizing kit I was somewhat scared by what I found though because at no point did it feel like I could get a tight enough fit that would not be problematic in hotter weather or if my finger swelled slightly for some reason.
It dawned on me that the ‘fitting’ of such a product is vital and that it is so easy for it to go wrong. And can you imagine having to have a device with a battery in it cut off at the hospital should problems occur?
I really do like the idea, but I cannot quite see how it will work for enough people to make it soar. And of course Apple could well pop up with one in September which would really brings these problems to the masses, unless they produce a smart ring that clips around your finger and which can be taken off with the press of a small button. Now there is an idea…
There was one at CES that was not joined in a circle so that it could stretch slightly.
